Toad Lily Adds Beauty to Fall Shade Gardens

Fall shadow garden creation is a fun, colourful, and tactile project. Here are six fall shade garden plant selections.

These elegant perennials have delicate pink or white blossoms on wiry stems above the leaves in late summer to fall. They flourish in moderate to full shade and add beauty to gardens.

Hupehensis (Japanese)

The interesting perennial toad lilies bloom in autumn when other plants die. Shaded areas are brightened by their orchid-like white, pink, purple, and blue flowers with speckles.

Trichyrtis toadlily

Coppery-red autumn fern leaves beautify fall yards. These evergreen ferns add texture and colour to shaded locations year-round.

Autumn Fern (Dryopteris erythrosora)

A stunning pile of leaves that changes colour throughout the season is made from Heuchera and Tiarella. Autumn coppery-orange foliage makes 'Sweet Tea' stand out in the shadow garden.

Sweet Tea Heucherella

Astilbes' late spring–early summer feathery flower plumes are appreciated. As temps drop, elegantly split foliage turns bronze or scarlet while fall blooms disappear.

Astilbe species.

This low-growing ground cover thrives in shaded areas where other plants struggle. Fall bugleweed's vivid blue blossoms contrast with its copper foliage.
