How to Grow and Care for Asiatic Lily Plants

The care of Asiatic lily plants can be rewarding. A tutorial to the procedure is here.

Soil should drain properly and be in mild to full sun. Plant spring or fall bulbs 6-8 inches deep and 12-18 inches apart. The bulb should fit in the planting hole without bending or crowding.

Asian lily like moist but not waterlogged soil. Water deeply once or twice a week, depending on soil moisture and rainfall.  Never water up; moisten the plant's base to avoid fungus.

Use 10-10-10 balanced fertiliser for spring growth.  Follow product dose instructions to fertilise every 6-8 weeks during the growing season.

Organic mulch around plant bases prevents weeds and retains moisture.  Mulch cools soil and prevents winter bulb rot.

Stake tall or heavy-blooming cultivars to prevent wind damage.  Early in the season, peg or support plants before they become tall.

Check for slugs, aphids, and lily bugs. Handpick or use organic insecticide soap.Avoiding overcrowding and improving airflow lessen botrytis and powdery mildew risk.

Pest and Disease Control

Late fall mulching protects bulbs from freezing in colder areas.  Cut back foliage in late fall or early winter after it dies naturally.

Winter Care

To preserve healthy roots and branches, gently separate bulbs when foliage dies back.
