Foolproof French Toast Recipe

Seared golden, soft, sweet, and custard-y French toast is excellent. This French toast recipe excels in all categories.  

– 1 medium loaf of bread* (about 16 ounces, see step 1) – 1 ½ cups whole milk** – 3 egg yolk – 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted – 2 tablespoons maple syrup or brown sugar – 1 tablespoon vanilla extract – 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon  – ¼ teaspoon fine salt – For serving: Maple syrup, butter, fresh berries or berry compote, whipped cream or Greek yogurt, sprinkle of powdered sugar…


Slicing bread into ¾-inch thick slices yields 8 large or 12 medium slices. Old bread, keep. Soft bread, 300°F oven.   


Step 1

Sliced bread should bake for 8 minutes on a large, rimmed baking sheet with an oven-safe cooling rack.Flip–bake 4–8 minutes.   

Step 2

Microwave or boil milk to prevent butter clumping. Save. Egg yolks and whites from three eggs. Whisk egg yolks in a medium bowl.   

Step 3

Add milk, butter, maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt. Baking 9x13.Start your electric skillet at 350°F. Egg mixture on one bread side.   

Step 4

Soak slices in egg mixture for ¼-inch, flip, and repeat. Stack wet slices on baking sheet. Mix egg again to distribute cinnamon. 

Step 5

Sizzle water to cook bread. Unsprayed buttery fries toast.Boil your cooking surface first! Slices lightly brown in skillet for 3–4 minutes.

Step 6

Moving bread to a clean cooling rack or plate. Too golden toasts before cooking? Reduce heat. Repeat French toast batter and bread.
