Best Homemade Buttercream Frosting Recipe

One of the best basic recipes to always have on hand is buttercream frosting.  

– 1 ½ cups unsalted butter softened – Tiny pinch fine sea salt – 1 ½ pounds powdered sugar 24 ounces; sifted – 1 tablespoon clear vanilla extract (this helps maintain the bright white color) – 2-3 tablespoons heavy cream or milk


For 6 to 7 minutes, beat the butter on medium-high speed in the bowl of a stand mixer with a paddle attachment.  


Step 1

Slowly add the salt and powdered sugar while the mixer is on low speed. Keep mixing until the sugar is fully mixed in.  

Step 2

Mix on low speed until the vanilla and cream or milk are fully mixed in.  

Step 3

Raise the speed of the mixer back to medium-high and beat the buttercream for another six to seven minutes.  

Step 4

If the frosting is too thick, add a little milk, one teaspoon at a time, until it's smooth enough.
